PMS and Early Menopause: What Women Should Know!

What the PMS study reveals 🕵️

This Incredible study published in mid-September on Jama Network tells us that people who suffer from premenstrual disorders, such as PMS and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (more severe), are more than twice as likely to experience early menopause. And that's serious, because early menopause can be linked to other health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.

The aim of the study is to examine the American women with premenstrual disorders (PMD) have an increased risk of early menopause and vasomotor symptoms related to menopause. Premenstrual disorders can include a variety of symptoms such as mood swings, fatigue, and abdominal pain that occurs before menstruation.

This study, carried out over 20 years on more than 1200 women, highlighted several elements:

  • LMost women, regardless of whether they had disorders or not, reached menopause during the studye. The average age at menopause was around 51 for all women.
  • Women with pre-menstrual disorders have approximately 2.67 times more likely to have an early menopause (which is really huge!)
  • These women were also more likely to have unpleasant menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes and night sweats, especially if these symptoms were severe or had lasted at least 5 years.
  • The women who smoked had a stronger association with early menopause.
  • Women who have severe disorders before menstruation had stronger associations with severe menopausal symptoms.
  • Hot flashes before menstruation were strongly associated with severe hot flashes during menopause..
