How do you put a tampon on gently?

Living with the rules is not always easy. Between cramps, mood swings, and leaks, it's sometimes hard to feel comfortable. And above all, when it is our first period or when we have never dared to use the tampon, we are afraid of going about it wrong.!

And yet the stamp can be an ally in choosing well-managed rules!

A tampon is a hygienic and discreet way to collect your menstrual flow. It is available in various sizes and absorbencies, to suit all needs. But how do you put a tampon easily and painlessly? This is a question that many women ask themselves, especially younger women.

In this article, we show you how to put a stamp, step by step. We will also give you tips on choosing the right pad and on how to avoid leaks.

First of all: how do you choose the right tampon?

There are various types of pads, suitable for all needs. To choose the right tampon, three factors must be taken into account:

Choosing the right absorption

It is indicated on the stamp package. A light absorption pad is suitable for light menstrual flow, while a super absorption pad is suitable for heavy menstrual flow.

How do I know what my menstrual flow is?

  • If you only use panty liners and only have a few drops: You have a light flow
  • If you change your coverage twice a day: You have an average flow
  • If your hygiene protection is full every 3/4 hours: You have an abundant flow
  • If you need to change your protections more than every 3 hours: You have a super abundant flow

We are all different but you should know that for the majority of women, the menstrual days with the most flow are the 2nd and 3rd days. It is therefore possible that you need different protections at different times.

Choosing the most suitable type of stamp

AWith or without applicator

There are two types of tampons: tampons with an applicator and tampons without an applicator. Tampons with an applicator are easier to insert, while tampons without an applicator are more discreet to have in the bag.

We advise you to try both and choose the one you will be most comfortable with:)

Beginner tip: to put a tampon without an applicator, you will probably have to insert your finger into your vagina to “help” it go to the bottom. If you're still not super comfortable with your body, maybe you can try a tampon with an applicator?

Organic stamp or classic tampon

Also, you will be able to choose between organic tampons and standard tampons: organic tampons are a bit more expensive but they are clearly cleaner for your body! If you can afford it, we highly recommend it 🙂

Organic tampons are made from natural materials, such as cotton or bamboo fiber. They are therefore more respectful of the environment and health. They are also hypoallergenic, making them more suitable for sensitive skin. A government report confirms that standard tampons contain chemicals and that they should be avoided.

In all cases, especially If it's your first period : Ask a sister, a friend, or even your mom ! They have all already experienced this and will certainly know how to give you advice on how to put your tampons properly! There is even a myth that says thatYou have periods at the same time as your loved ones.

How do I insert a tampon properly the first time?

Our short beginner's guide to tampons without an applicator!

Before inserting the tampon

  • Wash your hands thoroughly: They must be nickel to touch the private parts
  • If you ask how is it going : look at your hole with a mirror to know where to insert the tampon and what it looks like (it seems strange, but it's life to discover your body;))
  • If it's your first time: It's better to do that at home to be more comfortable in case of problems

When putting on the tampon

  • Remove plastic well around the stamp
  • Unroll the string in its entirety to be able to easily take it out in a few hours
  • Relax: You may have a hard time at first but that's like everything, it comes with time. It's your body, so no stress.
  • Choosing a comfortable position: again, we are all different, some prefer to squat, others will lift one leg and put it on the toilet bowl to feel comfortable. You will probably have to try several times before finding the technique that suits you best.
  • With one hand: Pull your lips apart to allow the tampon to access your vagina. With the other hand: push the stamp gently so that all its thickness enters.
  • Get up and waddle around: if it's in a good position, you should almost not feel it at all!
Bonus: if your hole is dry and you can't put your tampon in at all or it hurts: put a tiny amount of saliva with your finger to slightly moisten your vulva and facilitate insertion.

After putting on the tampon

  • Wash your hands
  • Ideally, change it every 4 hoursl (max every 6 hours)

And if I have an applicator: how do I put my tampon properly?

In addition to the rules above, always 100% important when you have a tampon with an applicator, tYou will be able to specifically apply these tips.

After taking the stamp out of its packaging and pulling the string as explained above, you will be able to:

  • Hold the top part of the tampon (the tampon + the applicator)
  • As above, insert the entire stamp
  • Afterwards, Pull the applicator cylinder back and then push the cylinder back to insert the tampon into your vagina
  • Remove the entire applicator, throw it in the trash and wash your hands

What should I do if the tampon hurts?

If you have discomfort or a slight pain, It is possible that you have positioned your tampon incorrectly.  In this case, you can try to insert it a little more (about 2cm).

If, despite this action, it still bothers you: remove it and try again with a new one.

If you continue to feel discomfort or pain: You may be irritated or need to improve your technique, do not hesitate to ask your loved ones or even to consult a gynecologist who will explain how to do it

NB: If you need more information on how to properly insert a tampon, go see a gynecologist. Our article is rather informative but not worth medical advice.

How do I remove my tampon?
